BASICCITY

BasicCity is a creative duo, formed by Malcolm Mokgosi “Basicc” and Michael Rumbi “City”. The duo consider themselves creatives first as they have numerous creative pursuits and view rap and other creative  as mediums.

Formed around July of 2021, the duo met in Bloemfontein South Africa where they both reside, Michael Rumbi is however, originally from Nairobi, Kenya. The duo quickly  went on to release five singles and one EP to positive reception and local airplay in both South Africa and Kenya.

In order to further their reach the duo took their music from the studio to the stage. However, neither were interested in the use of a backtrack and so they agreed to form a band. Their live performances were received with massive critical reception and they were soon performing all over their city. They have gone on to a mini-tour in Johannesburg, a performance at the Northern Cape Theatre and the University of the Free State for an over 1000+ crowd. They were invited to perform at the “Chale Wote Street Art Festival” in Accra, Ghana, and “Festival Koura Gosso” in N’ Djmanena , Chad but were unable to travel due to financial constraints. In June 2023 the duo went with their band to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown after successful fundraiser ran by AHADI, a multimedia company that is empowering and developing creatives across the Free State region, as part of the fringe festival. The duo and band went on to win one of the prestigious Standard Bank Ovation Awards at that year's festival.

The duo recently partnered with  AHADI to host the 5th Edition of “The AHADI Experience”  with support from Concerts SA, SAMRO and the Royal Norwegian Embassy. The showcase featured a diverse musical line-up with the upcoming talent of the region put on full display. This is the official second partnership between BasicCity and AHADI.

The duo has come out of their short musical hiatus for their first release of  2023. “Lose” an alternative hip-hop track produced by theNairobiNomad, with Iyanah and M. Rumbi slated for the 13th of January.
